History of Rugby at the University.

Way back in 1976, there were only three amateur clubs in the whole of the south of England, playing in a then struggling Southern amateur league and none of them outside London…

Dan Garbutt

Head Coach

Dan took over from Paul Johnstone as the club’s head coach following 2 years as the club’s assistant coach and is currently in his fourth year at the helm. Aside from coaching OURLFC, Dan is involved in a number of other clubs and teams. He is a head coach on Harlequins Rugby League’s Scholarship Program, where he heads up the under 16s age group and has also recently taken up the post of assistant coach with England Students. He has coached on the RFL’s performance pathway since 2004 which has included being Regional Head Coach for London and the South, coaching the Combined Regions Team and also being selected to attend National Coach Development Camp in 2007. Outside of Rugby League, Dan lives in Gloucester with his better half, Dawn, and works for school sport in Gloucestershire.

John Hobart

Assistant Coach

John has been involved in the club as a player and then coach for over a decade and has, in that time, been a tremendous asset to the club. As a no nonsense, go forward, prop John appeared for Oxford in 7 Varsity matches between 1995 and 2002 and represented England and Great Britain Students. Amongst his extensive playing history, he has appeared for the London Broncos alliance, Hemel Stags, Oxford Cavaliers and Coventry Bears. John is also one of the key figures in OURLFC's successful old boy's club. John, a graduate of Keble college, is a doctor of archaeology, and works for the University’s museums department as a hub manager. He lives with his wife, Dom, and dog, Trotsky, near Banbury where most of his time is spent renovating his house.

Tom Waterfield

Assistant Coach

Tom has taken on coaching duties this year following 3 seasons as a player including a hugely successful stint as club president in 2006-07. A committed club man, Tom has worked tirelessly for OURLFC and is captain of the club’s weekend team, the Mavericks, that play sporadically throughout the year. Initially playing as a centre before finding his best position at pivot, Tom played in 3 varsity matches from 2006-2008, losing his first and then winning the next two. His high point was an individual try he scored from 50 metres out in 2008, something he likes to mention to the current players on an almost weekly basis. Outside of OURLFC Tom plays and coaches at Oxford Cavaliers RLFC and works as a doctor in Oxford.
